Learning Community

The Scholar Athlete Learning Community is a cohort based program designed for students interested in exceling in sports and academics. Using the same traits and characteristics applied to achievement in their sport, students build the reading, writing and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in college. Engaged faculty and coaches work together to provide a perspective and orientation in which students recognize that athletics and academics complement each other. Success in the Scholar Athlete Learning Community prepares students to pursue their athletic and academic goals at the four-year college level.

An example of such success enjoyed by individuals comprising a team is the Men’s Basketball program. Several players participate in the learning community each year. Under the direction of Head Coach, Justin Piergrossi, with the support of faculty Chris Gibson and Dino Nomicos, Skyline College’s Men’s Basketball team was selected as the state Scholar Team Award winner for Men’s Basketball in 2009-2010 and has been a finalist in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. Team members have transferred to numerous four-year colleges to complete their education and participate in basketball.
