Skyline College Workforce Development Program honored by South City Chamber
SAN BRUNO, Jan. 24, 2003 Skyline College's Workforce Development Program was honored Friday by the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce for its work with the Airport Dislocated Worker Project.
Skyline College's partnership with PeninsulaWorks SSF, a joint venture with a number of San Mateo County agencies and private businesses, was recognized for Outstanding Business Innovation. The partners include Employment Development Department of Ramada Inn, San Mateo County Central Labor Council, San Mateo County Human Services Agency, United Airlines and Workforce Strategy Center.
Skyline College provides assessment, instruction and counseling for the re-employment of displaced workers from area airport related industries including United Airlines.
"Skyline College provides high quality education to many kinds of students throughout our community to help them prepare for a satisfying career. In doing this we meet the need of California's economy for a highly skilled workforce," said William Watson, Director of Workforce Development at Skyline College. "In these difficult economic times, Skyline's Airport Industry Dislocated Worker Project demonstrates a timely response to worker layoffs by providing specially tailored education for people taking their first steps on new career ladders."
The One-Stop Career Center opened in October at the Ramada Inn in South San Francisco to offer comprehensive employment tools to displaced airline machinists, flight attendants, reservation agents, engineers, pilots, managers, MIS programmers, food service workers, hotel staff, shuttle bus drivers, parking lot attendants, and other workers.
The center provides intensive career assessment and counseling, re-training courses, job listings and referrals, resume writing, and other employment resources and aids workers in finding jobs in other industries.
