The BESST Program at Skyline College
(Beyond Economic Self Sufficiency Tools)

Skyline College will partner with The San Mateo County Human Services Agency (SMCHSA) to implement a Food Stamp Education Training program. This is a new opportunity for Food Stamp recipients in San Mateo County that partners education and government to make college available to food stamp recipients. This now means that people have improved access to college as a tool to help better their lives while receiving food assistance. The program is called the BESST Program at Skyline, Beyond Economic Self Sufficiency Tools. BESST enables the college to provide additional support to students such as payments for books and fees, as well as a transportation allowance.

BESST Participants will have access to all the resources available to any Skyline student. In addition, BESST participants can access the services of the newly forming Center for Working Families. The Center establishes Skyline as a one-stop site for accessing multiple services related to employment and career development, work supports and public benefits, and financial literacy and asset-building strategies. Skyline College is partnering with multiple community based organizations and building upon its existing services and programs to bundle programs and services across three areas:

(1) Employment/Career Services,

(2) Income/Work Supports and

(3) Financial Services/Asset Building.
