Center for Working Families / Prosperity Hub Model at Skyline College
Expected start date: Fall 2009

A recent labor market analysis by the Center for the Study for Regional Change, UC Davis, highlighted the economic and workforce development opportunities in San Mateo County’s labor market. In it, Chris Brenner emphasized the significance of going beyond providing short term training for immediate job opportunities and suggested that a longer term strategy is necessary to provide appropriate workforce development for the county.

Skyline College is well aligned with this perspective and is proposing to develop a program that will enhance both access and success in targeted career technical education programs by integrating support services and instruction, bundling the services to address three key areas and change the framework of support services by replicating the Center for Working Families/Prosperity Hub Model of service delivery for career technical education students.

The Center would establish Skyline as a one-stop site for accessing multiple services related to employment and career development, work supports and public benefits, and financial literacy and asset-building strategies. Specifically, Skyline College would build upon its existing services and programs to bundle programs and services across three areas inherent in the CWF/PH framework:

(1) Employment/Career Services,

(2) Income/Work Supports and

(3) Financial Services/Asset Building.

With funding by the Bay Area Workforce Funding Collaborative, this innovative program strategy is currently under development beginning with a planning phase that will continue through December 2009.
