Magazine & Journal Databases (to access articles)
:

·        ProQuest Psychology Journals  on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Full-text psychology and social science journal articles

o        To search for more than one "concept", click on Advanced Search tab at the top of the page

o        To search only for articles that include the full text (the whole article) in the database, check the "Full text articles only" box next to: "Limit results to:" (below the date range box)

o        To limit the search to scholarly journals, check the "Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed " box (below the "Full text articles only" box)

o        To find research studies, click in the first search box and enter the words: study OR research

o        In the second search box, type the search word(s) for the first concept related to your topic. Type an OR between synonymous words for the same concept. Use an * to search for multiple words from the same root, e.g. child* will find articles with the words: child or children.

o        On the third line, type the search word(s) for the second concept related to your topic. Type an OR between synonymous words for the same concept.

o        Once you find one article specifically on your topic, click on any relevant subject headings (near the top of the article page) to find more articles on that topic.

o        To find research studies:
Look for articles in
scholarly journals that include the following sections:

§         Methods (may include "Procedure", "Participants", "Measures")

§         Results

§         Discussion

§         Data (usually included in statistical tables at the end of the article or throughout the article)

o        To print or e-mail an article, click on the print or e-mail buttons at the top left of the article.

·        Gale PowerSearch databases on campus or off-campus w/ library card
articles from academic journals, popular magazines, newspapers and reference sources; excellent general periodical database. 
Available from off-campus--as long as you have a library card (library card bar code number is required)

o        To narrow searches, use the Advanced search mode

·         PLEASE NOTE: When search results are first displayed, only magazine articles are shown, if available for your search.
Click on the “Journalstab to display academic journal articles on your topic; click on the "Newstab for news articles; click on the "Bookstab for reference book articles.

o        To limit the search to scholarly journals, look under: “Limit results:” and click in the checkbox to select: “to peer-reviewed publications

o        To find research studies, type search words for your topic and add: AND research OR study
Look for articles in

Freely accessible collection of more than 10,000 resources from the many disciplines related to child care and early education. Includes articles from 500+ journals, reports, grey literature, gov docs, etc.

·         E.R.I.C. database: freely available on the Web, no password required. Most comprehensive database available for education journal articles and non-journal education-related documents. Includes full-text of non-journal documents, but most journal article records only include abstracts; only a limited number of articles have the full-text available.

o        In the search boxes, enter search word(s) for each concept related to your topic

§         To search for research study articles, enter: study OR research  in one of the search boxes

§         To limit your search to journal articles only: in the “Publication Type(s):” selection box (on the lower half of the search page), select "Journal Articles "

§         To limit your search to research reports: in the “Publication Type(s): selection box (on the lower half of the search page), scroll down and select "Reports-Research" (NOTE: Research reports do not usually include full information on specific research studies.) 

o        Click on the Search button


Finding Periodicals:

To find an article that does not have the full text in any database, you need to find what library carries the journal in which the article was published. To find out which libraries carry a particular journal, click on "Finding Periodicals" from the Skyline College Library homepage.

Finding Books:

The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library System.

  • Type in the name of your topic in the search box and click the Search button.
  • Limit your search to books at Skyline by clicking on the Limit button at the right side of the page and then scroll down to near the bottom and click on Skyline College Library and then click OK.



Community Information Program (CIP)

The CIP database contains information on health and human service agencies serving San Mateo County and the Bay Area. Fairly extensive descriptions exist for the agencies, including addresses and telephone numbers, but also the names of executive directors, eligibility requirements for service, fees, access by public transportation, wheelchair accessibility into the building, target populations, languages other than English spoken by agency staff, and a narrative description of the services.

Volunteer Center of San Francisco (VCSF)
A clearinghouse of volunteer information for San Francisco nonprofit organizations, individuals, city agencies, and other civic groups, VCSF also develops more specialized programs for people with disabilities, youth, corporate volunteers, potential board members, and more. The site has a searchable database of organizations desiring volunteer, lists of specific volunteer opportunities, advice for nonprofits on recruiting and working with volunteers, and other information, some of which is also provided in Spanish.

Note the links in the left frame to regulations, forms, and the "Index to Precedents" (legal decisions of an administrative law judge which other judges then look to for guidance when deciding a case ruling), among other things.
