Books:

The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and Peninsula Library System (PLS) libraries.

  • Click on the drop-down menu at the left column, and select "SUBJECT Key Word(s)"
  • Type your subject in the entry box at the right column.
  • Some suggested search words:
    • South Africa history
    • Nelson Mandela
    • Apartheid
  • Limit your search to books at Skyline by clicking on the Limit button at the right side of the page and then scroll down to near the bottom and click on Skyline College Library and then click GO.

  • Select History Resource Center: World from the "Search in" pull-down menu
  • Enter search word(s) in the search box and click the Search button.
  • To narrow searches, combine concepts with AND; for multiple words with the same root, use *
    Example: South Africa* AND apartheid
  • At the results page, additional articles may be available by clicking on the article type tabs--"Periodicals", "Primary Sources", "Maps & Images" & "Reference Materials" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the title of an article to display the full text of the article.

Excellent general periodical database.

  • To search only for articles that include the full text (the whole article) in the database, check the "articles with text" box under "Limit the current search" (below the text entry box)
  • Enter search words in the search box and click the Search button.
  • To narrow searches, combine concepts with AND; for multiple words with the same root, use *
    Example: South Africa* AND history
  • Click on the title of an article to display the full text of the article.
  • Once you find one article specifically on your topic, click on any relevant subject headings (near the bottom of the article page) to find more articles on that topic.

African National Congress (ANC): Web site of this "national liberation movement....formed in 1912 to unite the African people and spearhead the struggle for fundamental political, social and economic change." The site includes copies of speeches and documents, biographies of the party's present and past leadership (including Nelson Mandela), archives of its publications, and information about its structure. The ANC is allied with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).

The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela: Companion site to the PBS "Frontline" episode "tells the story of the man behind the myth, probing Mandela's character, leadership and life's method through intimate recollections with friends, political allies, adversaries, and his fellow prisoners and jailers on Robben Island where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years." Includes a transcript of the show, a chronology, interviews, anecdotes, commentary, and a teachers' guide.

South Africa: Part of the Country Studies/Area Handbook series "describing and analyzing [South Africa's] political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors." Research completed May 1996. From the Library of Congress.

 

Truth and Reconciliation Commission: Proceedings, transcripts, audio recordings, and other official documentation from the governmental commission created to provide for "the investigation and the establishment of as complete a picture as possible of the nature, causes and extent of gross violations of human rights" committed in South Africa between 1960 and 1994.
