Central Services Technology/Sterile Processing

The Central Services Technology Program prepares graduates for employment in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers and private industry. Central Service departments, also known as Central Supply or Sterile Processing, process and distribute sterile and other supplies throughout the medical facility. The demand for trained central service workers is high. Graduates are encouraged to undertake further training and education to advance to other health careers.

The Central Services Technician Training program consists of a classroom/laboratory course (SURG 445) and a clinical preceptorship (SURG 446). The classroom/lab course is a one semester evening class. Two certificates are available in Central Service Technology. One certificate recognizes the completion of the classroom and laboratory experience, the other certificate includes 192 hours of clinical practice in a hospital setting.

The hospital preceptorship will be scheduled for the semester following the classroom/lab class. Completion of both classes in the program prepares the graduate to take national certification exam.

Requirements: You must be a high school graduate or equivalent to enter the program. You will also be asked to verify that you are free from communicable disease and should be able to lift 30 pounds.
