The Student Activities Office serves as a resource center to students. This office will be able to answer, or get an answer for you, to any question related to your status as a student of Skyline College. The Student Activities Office also serves as the facilitator for the Honors Celebration and the annual Commencement Ceremony.

Students interested in becoming active participants in the policy-making processes of Skyline College may do so by enrolling in Student Government 111/112. This variable unit course is designed to develop leadership strategies, critical thinking, effective planning, activity coordination, and experience in the democratic process.

Student Government

As a student enrolled in Skyline College, you are also a member of the Associated Students of Skyline College (A.S.S.C.).  The A.S.S.C. Governing Council is the elected body that has the responsibility of representing all Skyline students.  The ASSC Governing Council is your representative; let them know your views and hear your voice.

Students who participate in student government represent a variety of ages, backgrounds, interests and academic majors.  Some students have had previous experience in student government but many are often looking for the opportunity to gain valuable leadership, planning and communication skills. 

The ASSC Governing Council is always looking for new members. If you are interested in political activism, increasing cultural awareness or developing communication, team building and leadership skills, stop by the Student Activities Office, Room 6212 for information (application materials available through the links above). Any interested student with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 and enrolled in at least six units is eligible to participate as a member of the A.S.S.C. Governing Council.  Positions in the Governing Council are obtained through elections or by appointment. 

The A.S.S.C. Governing Council coordinates and facilitates the following items: lobbying at the state and federal level, planning activities, adopting and supervising the A.S.S.C. budget, participating in college committees and sharing in the development of college policies.

Required Candidate Meetings

• All Candidates must attend at least one ASSC Meeting in order to run for office

Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 2 P.M. in room 6203, Building 6.  If you are unable to make the ASSC meetings because of a conflict with your academic schedule you must submit a written statement to the Election Board with your application.

• Candidate Information Meeting: Wednesday, April 30, 4 P.M. in Room 6203, Building 6
• Candidate Forum: Wednesday, May 7, 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. in the cafeteria
• Election Days: Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16 in the Cyber Café, Building 6, Room 6102.

The Student Activities Fee and other fund raising activities support the A.S.S.C. and help fund student clubs and organizations, scholarships, educational and social programming, emergency loans, and many others worthy facets of campus life. Students who pay the fee are entitled to a Student Identification Card. The Student ID card provides substantial discounts at campus events and at quality local businesses. The card is available during registration and throughout the Fall and Spring semesters at the Student Activities Office.

The ASSC Governing Council also serves as a resource to Skyline clubs and organizations.

Student Government Courses

SGOV 111 STUDENT GOVERNMENT I – FALL (1-2)
One lecture hour per week for one unit. In addition, attendance at weekly Student Council meeting is required to earn two units.

Designed to assist Student Council members, club officers, and other interested students in acquiring background and skills for effective participation in the college community. Includes parliamentary procedure, group dynamics and analysis of the nature and techniques of effective leadership. (Open entry.) May be repeated once for credit. Transfer credit: CSU.

SGOV 112 STUDENT GOVERNMENT II – SPRING (1-2)
One lecture hour per week for one unit. In addition, attendance at weekly Student Council meeting is required to earn two units.

SGOV 115 COMMUNITY SERVICE & LEADERSHIP PRACTICUM (1)
(Credit/No Credit)
Eight lecture hours plus 24 hours of structured and verified community service in an established and approved service organization.

A practicum course in community service bringing together students and approved service agencies or organizations. The course prepares students for community service and helps them find an approved community opportunity that matches their service criteria. In addition to service in the community, the course meets four times in the classroom. May be repeated twice for credit. Transfer credit: CSU.

Student Clubs

Participating in a club, organization, or the ASSC is a great way develop leadership skills. Students interested in learning more about clubs should go to the Student Activities Office in Bldg. 6 (650-738-4375).

Starting a New Club or Organization
In order to start a new club or organization you must file a petition for charter with the Associated Students of Skyline College Governing Council and the Skyline Organizations and Club Council. Step by step instruction are listed in the Club / Organization Manual. Copies of the Club / Organizations Manual are available in the Student Activities Office, Bldg 6. The manual also lists instructions for reserving space on campus, posting materials, student club / organizations accounts, event planning, conference attendance, and request for funding procedures.
