Skyline Women’s Basketball Beats American River in Playoffs

Skyline women’s basketball defeated American River College Wednesday night in the first round of the Northern California playoffs.  Skyline fell behind early in the first quarter, but ended the quarter on an eight to zero run to take the lead at the end of the first quarter.  Skyline pushed the lead to five, 29-24 by the end of the first half.  At the start of the third quarter, Stephanie Allen made a three pointer and followed it up with a three point play started by a Victoria Langi steal to push the lead to 11. 

Second half scoring from sophomore Alyssa Dela Cruz and freshman Juliet Courtney helped Skyline’s lead grow to nearly twenty points before finishing off the game with a 78-59 victory.  Skyline will travel to Fresno City College Saturday for the second round of the playoffs.

Skyline Finishes Regular Season with Victory

Skyline College Women’s Basketball finished the 2015-2016 regular season with an 88-72 victory over Las Positas College.  Skyline was able to celebrate sophomore night with a big 32 point second quarter that saw Skyline’s lead grow to nearly 30 points at halftime.  Skyline and Las Positas traded baskets for most of the second half with the game never getting closer than 13 points.  All four sophomores scored: Stephanie Allen has 15 points, Jessica Pineda 11 points, Dana Michaels finished with 10 points, while Alyssa Dela Cruz chipped in with six.  Skyline finished the regular season with 17 wins and 11 losses and Coast Conference play with 7 wins and 5 losses. 

Three Trojans Make All-Conference Team

Three Skyline basketball players were named to the Coast Conference North All-Conference Team at Saturday’s conference meeting.  Sophomores Stephanie Allen and Dana Michaels were named First Team All-Conference, while sophomore Alyssa Dela Cruz was named Second Team All-Conference.  All three players were selected to play in the Sophomore Showcase on Friday, March 11.

 

Skyline Women Defeat San Jose City College

Skyline Women’s Basketball battled Wednesday night to defeat San Jose City College and move into second place in the Coast Conference.  Skyline played from behind for most of the first half before a Victoria Langi put-back tied the game at 29.  Skyline took charge early in the third quarter on back-to-back three pointers by Alyssa Dela Cruz.  Skyline stretched their lead to 13 before San Jose forced some turnovers to make a run of their own.  Clutch rebounding and scoring from Charme Noordzee and Stephanie Allen as well as good free throw shooting down the stretch by Dana Michaels and Arianna Sheehy clinched a 64-51 victory.  Stephanie Allen led all scorers with 23 points and all rebounders with 14.  Skyline travels to Chabot Friday for a 5pm game.

 

Skyline Defeats District Rival San Mateo

Skyline College Women’s Basketball defeated College of San Mateo last Friday by a score of 72-47.  San Mateo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but that would be the only time that Skyline trailed throughout the entire game.  Skyline pushed their lead to as many as 8 points before San Mateo cut the lead to 5 at halftime.  Skyline used a strong surge in the second half to extend the lead 10 at the beginning of the third quarter.  Skyline continued to add on as the game progressed finishing with a strong fourth quarter.  Sophomore Alyssa Dela Cruz led Skyline with 19 points while sophomore Stephanie Allen chipped in with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Skyline will go on the road to play Ohlone College Friday at 5pm.

Skyline Women Win Consolation Championship

Skyline women’s basketball rebounded after an opening round loss to win the Consolation Championship at the Fullerton College Tournament.  Skyline suffered a first round loss to Long Beach City College before beating San Diego Mesa College and Santa Monica College to win the Consolation bracket.  Sophomores Dana Michaels and Stephanie Allen were selected to the all-tournament team.  Skyline finished the preseason with a 10-6 record.  Skyline opens Coast Conference play on Wednesday, January 6 when they host City College of San Francisco.

Skyline Women’s Basketball Take Third at Fresno City Tournament

Skyline bounced back after a tough loss to Fresno City College with an impressive come from behind win over San Jose City College on Sunday to take third place in the tournament.  Skyline fell behind early, but clawed back into the game with good shooting.  By halftime Skyline had closed the gap to just 4 points, trailing 41-37.  San Jose regained control in the third quarter and extended their lead to 8 points.  Skyline picked up their intensity in the fourth quarter to quickly cut into San Jose’s lead.  Skyline took the lead for good with 3 minutes left in the game.  Skyline was lead by freshman Juliet Courtney who finished with 24 points.  Sophomore Dana Michaels added 13 while sophomore Stephanie Allen and freshman Arianna Sheehy each chipped in 10.  Stephanie Allen was selected to the all-tournament team for her solid all- around play throughout the weekend.  Skyline will travel to the Golden Gate Classic to take on Los Angeles Valley College Friday at 3:30pm.

Skyline Women’s Basketball Defeats Reedley      

Skyline defeated Reedley College 69-62 in the opening round of the Fresno City College Tournament.  Skyline got off to a slow shooting start, falling behind by as many as 8 points in the first half.  Back to back threes by Juliet Courtney closed the gap to two points at halftime.  Skyline battled in the third quarter to tie the game at 45.  Timely shooting and solid defense helped Skyline pull ahead halfway through the fourth quarter.  Consistent free throw shooting down the stretch helped seal the victory for the Trojans.  Sophomore Alyssa Dela Cruz led the way with 17 points while sophomore Jessica Pineda and freshman Arianna Sheehy chipped in 12 points each.  Skyline will play host Fresno City College in the tournament semifinal.

Skyline Women’s Basketball Improves to 5-2 With Win Over Marin

Skyline bounced back from last week’s loss to Mission with a 69-29 win over College of Marin.  Skyline shot the ball well early to take a quick lead and never looked back.  A spread scoring attack lead by Juliet Courtney, 15 points, and Dana Michaels, 13 points, helped keep Marin’s defense off-balance.  Solid defense and rebounding by Skyline in the first half helped create a comfortable lead that held up for the game.  Skyline will travel to Fresno City College on Friday, December 11.

Skyline Defeats De Anza in Conference Crossover

Skyline College defeated De Anza College on Friday night 71-66.  The lead changed hands several times in the first half, but a late run by De Anza left Skyline with a 6-point deficit at halftime.  Skyline had a strong start to the second half making a quick run of their own to take a 1 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Skyline pressed their lead to double digits early in the 4th quarter and held on to win 71-66.  Skyline had three players in double figures: sophomore Stephanie Allen led the way with 23 points, sophomore Dana Michaels added 16 and freshman Charme Noordzee chipped in with 14.  Skyline will host Mission College on Tuesday night at 7pm.

Skyline Defeats Monterey

Skyline defeated Monterey Peninsula College on Tuesday night 64-60.  Skyline fell behind early in the first quarter, but managed to get back into the game with a 25-23 lead at halftime.  Another sluggish start put Skyline behind by 8 to start the 4th quarter.  Solid defense and timely scoring from freshmen Arianna Sheehy and Victoria Langi helped Skyline take the lead for good with about 2 minutes left in the game.  Langi and Sheehy led Skyline with 17 and 15 points respectively.

Skyline Women’s Basketball Wins Consolation Championship

 The Skyline College Women’s Basketball team won the Consolation Championship in last weekend’s Mission College Tournament.  After an opening night loss, Skyline bounced back to win their next two games, including the Consolation Championship game over Lassen College.  Skyline featured a spread scoring attack that saw every player contribute.  Sophomore Stephanie Allen and freshman Arianna Sheehy were named to the All-Tournament Team.  Skyline’s next game is Tuesday, November 17 at Monterey Peninsula College.

Women’s Basketball Finishes Strong

Skyline College Women’s Basketball completed a perfect second half of the Coast Conference season by defeating San Jose City College Wednesday night.  Skyline took at 27-21 lead into halftime and never looked back.  The Trojans extended their lead by as many as 15 points in the second half before finishing the game off with a 61-48 win.  With Wednesday’s win, Skyline finished with an overall record of 17-8 and a Coast Conference record of 8-4.  Skyline anxiously awaits the playoff bracket to be released on Sunday and hopes to stay hot in post-season play.

2/11/15 Skyline Women’s Basketball Defeats Chabot College on Sophomore Night

Skyline College made sophomore night special by beating the #2 ranked team in Nor Cal, Chabot College.  Chabot’s stellar first half play earned them an 11 point halftime lead, but Skyline refused to give up.  Skyline battled back in the second half through great defense and rebounding, as well as some timely shooting.  The timeliest shot came from sophomore Monique Garrett who sank a buzzer beating three-pointer to send the game to overtime.  Skyline used more of Monique’s outside shooting in the extra period to seal the game and a 75-68 win.  Skyline was lead by Monique Garrett and Tianna Mitchell who both had 17 points, while Sahara Clay chipped in another 15.  Mitchell also led the team in rebounds with 21 and blocks with 4.  Skyline has made great strides this year and much of the team’s success can be attributed to its sophomores: Clay, Garrett, Mitchell, forward Marielle Beltran, point guard Jazel Talauta, and shooting guard Chloe Tinio. 

2/4/15Skyline Women’s Basketball defeats City College of San Francisco

 Skyline College Women’s Basketball defeated City College of San Francisco on Wednesday night by a final of 60-50.  Skyline used a spread scoring attack, good post play, and great perimeter defense to lead the Rams 36-24 at halftime.  CCSF closed the lead in the second half, but good ball control from Jazel Talauta and timely shooting from Monique Garret helped the Trojans pull away.  Skyline will host Ohlone College at 5pm on Friday.

1/30/15 Skyline Women’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series With CSM

Skyline College Women’s Basketball defeated College of San Mateo last Friday 70-30 to sweep the season series against the Bulldogs.  Skyline jumped out to a huge halftime lead through good ball movement, unselfish play, and great defense.  Stephanie Allen led the way with 22 points.  Tianna Mitchell added 12 rebounds, while Sahara Clay chipped in with four blocks.

1/4/15 Skyline Women’s Basketball Gets Back on Track 

After two tough tournaments Skyline College got back on track Saturday with a win over Butte College.  Skyline established an early lead and received scoring contributions from all 11 players in an 82-46 victory.  Stephanie Allen led all scorers with 19 points.  Skyline opens up Coast Conference play at College of San Mateo on Wednesday, January 7 at 7pm.

12/14/14 Skyline Women’s Basketball Wins Fresno City College Tournament

Skyline College battled back from being down 15 points at halftime to defeat Reedley College for the championship of the Fresno City College Tournament. Skyline’s slow start offensively coupled with Reedley efficient scoring attack led to the halftime deficit. Skyline never gave up though, and slowly chipped away at Reedley’s lead. Skyline finally took their first lead of the game with about three minutes left. The final three minutes were back and forth with Skyline finally sealing the game after back to back lay-ups by Sahara Clay and Jazel Talauta. Skyline improved their record to 8-0 with the win. Jazel Talauta was named to the All-Tournament Team and Stephanie Allen was named Tournament MVP.

12/13/14 Skyline Women’s Basketball Downs Las Positas  

Skyline College defeated Las Positas College on Saturday night to advance to the championship of the Fresno City College Tournament. Skyline and Las Positas battled back and forth in the first half until Monique Garret hit a buzzer-beater to put the Trojan up four at halftime. Skyline continued to push the tempo on offense and was able to limit Las Positas’s three-point shooting with tight defense. Skyline eventually stretched the lead and won by a final of 73-56. Skyline had 4 players in double figure scoring including Stephanie Allen, 17 points, Jazel Talauta, 12 points and 7 assists, Tianna Mitchell, 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Monique Garret, 11 points. Skyline will play Reedley College in the tournament championship.

12/12/14 Skyline Women’s Basketball Beats Porterville to Open FCC Tournament

Skyline College improved their record to 6-0 with an opening round win over Porterville College in the Fresno City College Tournament. Skyline fell behind early and battled their way back to a 35-27 halftime lead with the help of a 24-6 run to end the half. Porterville chipped away at Skyline’s lead throughout the entire second half before finally regaining the lead at 62-61 with just one minute left. Trailing by one, Skyline came up with a big defensive stop allowing Stephanie Allen to score the winning basket with 20 seconds left in the game for a 63-62 win. Stephanie Allen led all scorers with 23 points, while Alyssa Dela Cruz added 13 points and Jazel Talauta chipped in 12.  

12/3/14 Skyline Women’s Basketball Defeats Gavilan College      

Skyline College defeated Gavilan College last night to improve to 5-0 on the season. Skyline never trailed in the game and received scoring contributions from nine players. Good team defense and timely shooting gave Skyline a 41-21 lead at halftime. Skyline pressed their lead to over 20 early in the second half and maintained that lead throughout the contest. Skyline’s offense was lead by Stephanie Allen, 20 points, Tianna Mitchell, 12 points, and Alyssa Dela Cruz, 11 points. Jazel Talauta controlled the tempo of the game and set up Skyline scorers with eight assists. Mitchell and Sahara Clay lead Skyline’s rebounding effort with 10 and seven rebounds respectively. Skyline will open the Fresno City College Tournament against Porterville College on Friday, December 12.

11/26/14 Skyline Women’s Basketball Defeats Gavilan College in Conference Cross-Over

Skyline extended their record to 4-0 to start the season after last night’s win 61-43 over Gavilan College of Gilroy. Skyline received contributions from its full line-up in a contest decided by defense. Skyline’s defense allowed only 19 second half points allowing them to stretch their nine point half time lead to over 20 by the midway mark of the second half. Skyline’s defense was anchored by Tianna Mitchell, seven rebounds and three blocks, and Sahara Clay, seven rebounds and four blocks. Mitchell also led all scorers with 18 points. Sophomore Jazel Talauta chipped in 10 points and seven assists while Alyssa Dela Cruz added 10 points in the effort. Skyline will travel to Gavilan next Wednesday, December 3, to play the host Rams.

11/18/14 - Skyline Beats De Anza in Conference Cross-Over

Skyline College defeated the defending Coast Conference South Champion De Anza College Tuesday night by a final score of 80-63. Skyline jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, outscoring the Dons in each half of play. Skyline’s unselfish play was displayed by their solid team defense and spread scoring attack. Alyssa Dela Cruz lead Skyline in scoring with 17 points, while Stephanie Allen and Tianna Mitchell added 15 points each. Jazel Talauta led the way with 9 assists, and Sahara Clay led the team in both blocks and rebounds. Skyline hosts Gavilan College next Tuesday, November 25, at 7pm.
