The Skyline College Child Development Center provides a comprehensive child development program, open to children of students, faculty and staff of the San Mateo Community College District, Skyline, CSM and Canada colleges. Low-income students may be eligible for subsidy by the California Department of Education, and fees are based on a sliding scale. Services are available for eligible children ages 2 - 5.9 years of age

Skyline College Child Development Center is licensed by the Department of Social Services, License #41400216, and is funded through the California Department of Education and parent fees.

Children will attend 1 of 2 classrooms.

Purpose

 

Skyline College Child Development Center has three main interrelated purposes:

To provide high-quality care and developmentally appropriate education experiences for children;
To promote access to higher education by providing a service to student-parents so that they can pursue their educational goals and achieve self-sufficiency;
To provide an opportunity for young children to learn in a diverse, multicultural atmosphere, to assume autonomy, self-control, and respect for others, to obtain the skills for kindergarten readiness, and to better understand the world around them.
Philosophy

Skyline College Child Development Center strongly believes that young children learn best through play. To make the most of the learning opportunities, the classroom teachers in the program facilitate a variety of hands-on, direct experiences for the children.

The Child Development Center desires to nurture compassion and to encourage personal growth in all endeavors, both by interaction with others and by individual journeys of understanding. Through play and the development of relationships, children grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. Our children's program is devoted to the development of the whole child in partnership with the family and home.

Skyline College Child Development Center provides the following services:

Child Care / Child Development Activities

High quality child care and educational experiences for children of student-parents attending college are provided. Through the variety of opportunities for grow provided, children develop in the areas of:

social
emotional
physical
cognitive
Parent Education

Opportunities are available for student-parents so that they may more easily pursue their educational goals, and to provide information to parents about child development in order to strengthen and support their existing parenting skills.

Community Social Service

Local community service referrals for families in the areas of legal, medical, employment, housing assistance and other concerns are provided.

Skyline College Child Development Center is coordinated by a Directory who holds a Child Development Program Center Permit and a Master's Degree in Education.

Child Development Center staff is comprised of teachers holding State of California issued Child Development Center Permits and Bachelor's and/or AA degrees in Education.

Faculty and staff of the San Mateo Community College District, and student-parents currently enrolled in any SMCCD classes at Skyline College, College of San Mateo or Canada College, may enroll their child(ren) in the Child Development Center

Families may choose full-time or part-time enrollment, as space allows.

Subsidized care is available for income eligible families. Eligibility must be established each semester. Determination of income eligible status can be obtained at the Child Development Center's Office.

 

 

Child Eligibility

 

Children who are 2 years through 5.9 years of eligible student-parents, faculty and staff may attend. The program does no discriminate in determining which children are served. The policy of the San Mateo County Community College District is to provide an educational and employment environment in which no person shall be unlawfully denied full and equal access to, the benefits of, or be unlawfully subjected to discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic group identification, race, ancestry, national origin, religion, color, age or mental or physical disability in any program or activity administered by, funded directly by, or that receives and financial assistance form the Stare Chancellor or Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. The program welcomes children with disabilities and operates in accordance with the provisions of the American with Disabilities Act of 1990. The ADA applies to any child or adult who has a disability, is perceived to have a disability or has a record of disability.

 

Fees

 

A sliding scale fee will be charged based on income and family size. Student-parents with income in excess of minimum State fees schedule will be charged a portion of the full cost of service.

Full Cost Fees for 2008-2009 are:

Caterpillar Room (ages 2 - 3.5 years)

Full-time - (5 hours of more per day) - $55.00 per day
Part-time - (less than 5 hours per day - $45.00 per day
 

 

Butterfly Room (ages 3.5 - 5.9 years)

Full-time - (5 hours of more per day) - $43.00 per day
Part-time - (less than 5 hours per day - $38.00 per day
 

Registration Fee - $50.00 per semester

The sliding fee schedule is set by the California Department of Education and is subject to change. A current fee schedule is available at the Child Development Center.
