Biography

After my BA in English from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, I moved to San Francisco to write a novel based on my Air Force experience during the wind-down of America’s Viet Nam War. After earning an extended Master’s Degree in Composition Teaching and English/Creative Writing at SFSU, I began a career as a community college writing tutor/teacher by day and a floor supervisor in a major Union Square department store San Francisco by night. (The novel got written early in the mornings). For the last 20+ years, I have taught composition and literature and critical thinking “up and down the scale” of difficulty in community colleges in the Bay Area. I’ve been a full-time faculty member at Skyline since 1998, a Puente instructor, an Honors assistant, a statistics freak as a member of Institutional Planning. I love tutoring writing the most and believe anybody at all can learn to write a good academic essay-- if they are willing to put in the time writing always takes and aren’t too prideful to ask for help. Skyline offers excellent The Learning Center support.

Michael Cross (Assistant Professor)

Language Arts - English

Biography

Michael Cross has taught college-level reading, writing and critical thinking courses for over a decade. In current courses, he joins students in investigating representations of difference in popular culture in an effort to challenge xenophobia (or "fear of otherness") in all of its guises. As a result, students study how zombies, vampires, and bogeymen can help them better understand complex identity categories like race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. When he is not working with students, Michael practices his own writing as a poet and scholar. Recent books of poetry include In Felt Treeling (Chax 2008), Haecceities (Cuneiform Press 2010), The Katechon 1-100 (Delete Press 2012), and Katechon 3 (Vigilance Society 2014). Editorial projects include Involuntary Vision: after Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (Avenue B 2003), Building is a process / Light is an element: Essays and Excursions for Myung Mi Kim (Queue Books 2008), and a forthcoming edition of the George Oppen Memorial Lectures (National Poetry Foundation 2015). Michael earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College and both an MA and PhD in Literature from SUNY Buffalo. He lives with his wife, their son, and a menagerie of animals in Oakland.

Biography

Robert Tindall is a writer, classical guitarist, inveterate traveler, and long-time practitioner of Zen Buddhism, whose work explores the crossing of frontiers into other cultures and states of consciousness. He is the author of two books, the first, The Jaguar that Roams the Mind, is a personal narrative of a journey into the vanishing realm of Amazonian shamanism. The second, The Shamanic Odyssey: Homer, Tolkien and the Visionary Experience, is an exploration of the indigenous, shamanic roots of Western culture and literature. Besides his various articles on the practice of traditional medicine within the Native American Church and among the vegetalistas of the Peru, Robert has published on pilgrimage along the Camino to Santiago, the commodification of Buddhism in the Himalayas, and on the spiritual practice of the medieval quest in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Robert holds two Master’s degrees, one in English Literature and the other in TESOL, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. He currently lives with his family in Tarapoto, Peru.
