The role of
the Anesthesia Technologist is to expedite, facilitate, and support
the clinical work done by the professional anesthesia personnel.
Anesthesia Technologists are trained to perform a wide range of
skills. They are responsible for managing the anesthesia equipment
and its proper maintenance, including procurement, assembly, operation
troubleshooting, dismantling, and cleaning. In addition in many
facilities they may be responsible for the operation of the blood
cell saver, performance and evaluation of thromboelastrographs,
and the operation of the rapid infusion system. The demand for trained
anesthesia technologists is high. Graduates that wish to continue
their training and education could easily move into Surgical Technology,
Respiratory Therapy or Biomedical Engineering training programs.
The program at Skyline College consists of a classroom/laboratory
class and a clinical preceptor component. The classroom/lab component
(SURG 680) is a 16-week evening/Saturday class. Graduates will be
eligible to take the certification exam given by the American Society
of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians.
Requirements:
You must be a high graduate or equivalent to enter the program.
Concurrently enrolled
high school students will also be accepted. It is highly recommended
that you be eligible for English 800 at Skyline or its equivalent.
Cost: Be prepared for the cost of books, lab
coats, scrubs, and nametags. The estimated cost is $250.
