The role of the Anesthesia Technologist is to expedite, facilitate, and support the clinical work done by the professional anesthesia personnel. Anesthesia Technologists are trained to perform a wide range of skills. They are responsible for managing the anesthesia equipment and its proper maintenance, including procurement, assembly, operation troubleshooting, dismantling, and cleaning. In addition in many facilities they may be responsible for the operation of the blood cell saver, performance and evaluation of thromboelastrographs, and the operation of the rapid infusion system. The demand for trained anesthesia technologists is high. Graduates that wish to continue their training and education could easily move into Surgical Technology, Respiratory Therapy or Biomedical Engineering training programs.

The program at Skyline College consists of a classroom/laboratory class and a clinical preceptor component. The classroom/lab component (SURG 680) is a 16-week evening/Saturday class. Graduates will be eligible to take the certification exam given by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians.

photoRequirements: You must be a high graduate or equivalent to enter the program. Concurrently enrolled high school students will also be accepted. It is highly recommended that you be eligible for English 800 at Skyline or its equivalent.

Cost: Be prepared for the cost of books, lab coats, scrubs, and nametags. The estimated cost is $250.
