What is Common Course Numbering (CCN)?

California Community Colleges have made it easier for students to transfer credits between schools with the new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system.

  • Equivalent courses at California Community Colleges will be renamed with the same course number and name.
  • This will make it easier to confirm that course credit is the same no matter where you took the course.
  • Change went into effect Fall 2025. Additional changes go into effect Fall 2026.
  • Courses you have already completed will not change on your transcript. Don't worry about losing any progress!

Questions? Contact the Transfer Center

Beginning in Fall 2025,

  • Transfer students who are new or who were not enrolled continuously at a California Community College will follow the new Cal-GETC pattern for general education requirements.
  • The state's new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system will update course numbers for a selection of GE courses.

What does this mean for me in Summer 2026 and Fall 2026?

Summer 2026 course numbers will stay the same. When registering for Fall 2026 classes, students should use WebSchedule to look up the new course number, as listed in the table below.

Example:

  • Summer 2026: If you want to take ENGL 110: Composition, Literature, and Critical Thinking, look up ENGL 110 as usual.
  • Fall 2026: If you want to take the same ENGL 110: Composition, Literature, and Critical Thinking course, look for ENGL C1002 instead.

**Related Course Changes:

  • ECE. 201 is the only course changing to CDEV. All other ECE. courses will retain the ECE. discipline name through the Fall 2026/Spring 2027 semester. All other ECE. courses are expected to change to CDEV effective Fall 2027.
  • MATH 851 (Just-In-Time Support for Calculus I) changed to MATH 8210 (Just-In-Time Support for Calculus I) - Effective Fall 2026.

Why does this matter to me?

Since the course numbers and titles are changing in Fall 2026, you want to make sure you do not accidentally repeat a course you took earlier.

Will classes that I took before Fall 2026 change to the new CCN?

Don't worry, you will not lose any progress!

Courses that you took before Fall 2026 will not change in your records. The same course name, number, and title will appear with the original course information on your official transcript.

If you passed a course before Fall 2026, you should not re-take the same course with the new title and number. The two courses will be equivalent

Example: If you already passed MATH 251 in a prior semester, you will not need to take MATH C2210.

Example: If you took MATH 251 before or during Summer 2026, your transcript will still show MATH 251. The same class in Fall 2026 onward will show the new CCN, MATH C2210.

When can we expect to see more courses with CCNs announced?

We are adding 17 new CCNs in the Fall 2026 semester and 50 in Fall 2027. More will be added each year until the goal of 300 is reached.
