What is a Peer Tutor?
Peer Tutors are currently enrolled Skyline College students who provide academic support to fellow students by guiding them through course material and fostering effective study habits and problem-solving strategies. Peer tutors encourage students in becoming independent learners by promoting a collaborative and positive learning environment, and by offering feedback that inspires growth and critical thinking.
Job Duties
- Conduct one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions (In-Person & Online)
- Support students in gaining a stronger understanding of course content and material through the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Adapt tutoring approaches to students’ diverse learning styles and foster an inclusive, culturally responsive environment
- Model successful student practices, such as organization, time-management, note-taking and study strategies
- Complete administrative tasks, such as maintaining tutor session logs
- Maintain regular, timely communication with the tutoring lab leads and Learning Center Manager
- Promote tutoring services on-campus through ongoing outreach tasks and brief classroom visits
- Participate in mandatory semester orientations and ongoing, monthly professional development trainings
Requirements
- Must be a current Skyline College student and maintain enrollment in a minimum of 6-units.
- Received a B+ or higher in the subject(s) you are applying to tutor.
- Completion of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)’s Level I International
Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC). Students can earn their Level I certificate
through the following options:
- Option A (Recommended): Successful enrollment in and completion of LSKL 110: Effective Tutoring and Practicum (1-unit course).
- Option B: Completion of the Learning Center’s CRLA Level I online, asynchronous training modules. Students must first be granted permission to opt out of enrolling in LSKL 110.
- Must demonstrate respect, awareness and humility towards diverse cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds and experiences
Pay Rate
- The pay rate for our tutors is $17.12 per hour.
